Case Study of Pipeline Project: A new generation Alliancing contract based on the NEC

The design and construction of the Isle of Grain pipeline UK, when completed will connect the transmission network with new gas supplies being imported to north Kent. The 21 km high pressure pipeline is perhaps one of the most sensitive in the UK - it crosses two internationally designated nature reserves - Natura 2000 sites listed under the RAMSAR convention - and a large number of ponds which support diverse cross sections of protected species.

This pipeline is being designed and constructed in terms of an alliance between National Grid, AB Rhead and Amec. This approach is based on the NEC (Target cost –option C) and earlier partnerships that National grid had entered into. The approach has enabled the client to better manage risks and project outcomes.

This case study  outlines the alliancing arrangements and the use of the NEC Target cost contract on this project.

The case study was presented to a select audience at SAICE House on 20 August 2008 by Chris Barron and Tony Nixon of AB Read gave the presentation.
